The Cannon River was added to Minnesota's Wild & Scenic Rivers Program in 1980. The designated stretch extends from Faribault to its confluence with the Mississippi River.
The Cannon River has segments in both "scenic" and "recreational" classifications. (see: general information on river classification).
The original management plan for this stretch of the Cannon River was adopted in 1980.
There is currently no Wild & Scenic Rivers planning process underway for the Cannon River.
